The Estate Gardener is responsible for the daily care, maintenance, and visual excellence of the estate’s grounds, formal gardens, and landscaped areas. This role requires an experienced horticulturist who combines strong technical skills with an eye for detail, ensuring the property remains pristine, healthy, and visually stunning across all seasons. The Estate Gardener works closely with the estate management team and must maintain the highest standards of professionalism and privacy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Horticultural Care: Manage the planting, pruning, weeding, and general upkeep of formal gardens, flower beds, shrubs, trees, and seasonal displays.
  • Turf Management: Oversee lawn care, including precision mowing, edging, aeration, fertilizing, and weed control.

  • Pest & Disease Control: Proactively identify plant diseases, pests, and nutrient deficiencies. Implement safe, effective treatment plans (organic or integrated pest management preferred).
  • Seasonal Transitions: Manage spring openings and fall closings, including winterization of sensitive plants, leaf removal, and planting of seasonal bulbs or annuals.
  • Hardscape & Cleanliness: Keep driveways, walkways, patios, and garden structures immaculate and free of debris, weeds, or moss.
  • Equipment & Inventory: Maintain and service gardening tools and machinery (mowers, trimmers, blowers). Keep a clean, organized tool shed and manage landscaping inventory/supplies.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: 3–5+ years of professional gardening or landscaping experience, preferably on a private estate, high-end commercial property, or botanical garden.
  • Horticultural Knowledge: Deep understanding of plant identification, soil health, pruning techniques, and seasonal growth patterns.
  • Equipment Proficiency: Safe and skilled operation of standard landscaping power tools and machinery.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (heat, rain, cold), lift up to 50 lbs, and perform strenuous physical labor daily.
  • Licensing: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Relevant horticultural certifications or a degree in Botany/Horticulture is a strong plus.

Core Competencies & Attributes

Discretion & Privacy: Absolute respect for the employer’s privacy and confidentiality is non-negotiable. The ideal candidate maintains a low profile and professional boundaries while working on-site.

  • Detail-Oriented: A sharp eye for aesthetics, symmetry, and overall estate presentation.
  • Self-Motivated: Ability to work independently, manage daily schedules efficiently, and spot what needs to be done without constant supervision.
  • Collaboration: A team-player attitude when coordinating with estate managers, housekeepers, or external specialized contractors (e.g., arborists or hardscape teams).
