Senior Gardener – Nr Otley West Yorkshire - £50,000+ GPA
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Gardener to join a large private estate near Otley in a senior, hands-on role. Working alongside the current gardener, this position would suit a highly skilled and knowledgeable horticulturalist who can provide expert support across the formal gardens, flower beds and productive kitchen garden.
The estate extends to approximately 22 acres, although the focus of this role will be the formal gardens immediately surrounding the property. These include a large, terraced garden planted with a mix of shrubs and herbaceous borders, a formal parterre, a hornbeam walk, and a rose-covered colonnade-style pergola leading to a terraced dining area.
The grounds also include a walled garden, which provides cut flowers for the house as well as a wide selection of seasonal fruit and vegetables, together with a traditional glasshouse.
This is a hands-on gardening role with a focus on maintaining and enhancing the formal gardens, flower beds, vegetable garden and glasshouse. External contractors are already engaged for lawn care, hedge trimming and tree work, so the successful candidate will be able to concentrate on detailed horticultural work and the day-to-day care of the planted areas.
- Maintaining the formal gardens, terraces, herbaceous borders, parterre and planted areas to a high standard.
- Caring for the walled garden, including seasonal fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for the house.
- Supporting the current gardener with day-to-day horticultural tasks and ongoing garden development.
- Managing planting, pruning, propagation, watering, weeding and general garden maintenance.
- Maintaining the traditional glasshouse and supporting productive growing throughout the seasons.
- Working alongside external contractors where required, while focusing primarily on the formal and productive garden areas.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and confident gardener with strong practical horticultural skills and a genuine passion for private estate gardening. They should be comfortable working as part of a small team, able to use their initiative, and capable of maintaining high standards across both ornamental and productive garden areas.
This is offered as a full-time position, although a minimum three-day week may also be considered for the right candidate.
Salary: £50,000+ gross per annum, depending on experience.
