Description:
This is a hands-on, resourceful role for a household professional who takes ownership and builds systems that run with little oversight. The family includes two full-time working parents with active schedules and two children, ages 9 and 6.
They keep a primary home in Hyde Park and a second home in Lake Forest where they spend summers and frequent weekends.
The right person operates independently, identifies what needs attention, and handles it with minimal direction. Attitude is the top priority. This person treats every task as worth doing well and takes pride in handling whatever the day brings, from managing a contractor to organizing a garage to tidying a space or loading a dishwasher. The role works alongside the family's nanny and housekeeper.
Job Duties Will Include:
- Coordinating the children's schedules and transportation
- Coordinating with the family’s nanny
- Driving the children to activities as needed, including when they have separate activities at the same time.
- Running errands including grocery shopping, prescription pickups, and scheduling and handling car maintenance
- Finding, vetting, scheduling, and supervising reasonably priced vendors and contractors for household maintenance and projects
- Overseeing contractor work for quality, following up on incomplete or substandard work, and chasing down vendors who fail to show or finish
- Managing household projects such as custom closet build-outs, garage organization, seasonal sorting of the children's clothing, and organizing household items and children’s art supplies
- Building and maintaining systems of organization across both homes
- Tracking recurring household tasks and seasonal needs, including preparing the Lake Forest home for summer and managing the pool systems, sprinkler systems, and other services through opening and closing
- Light tidying and returning items to their place to keep both homes in order
- Helping coordinate weekend babysitting by providing backup childcare when needed, or finding an outside source to cover that need
REQUIREMENTS
- Intent to make a long-term commitment to the role
- A down-to-earth, solutions-oriented approach, with genuine pride in handling whatever the day requires
- Ability to work independently and use sound judgment with minimal supervision
- A resourceful, budget-conscious approach to vendors, projects, and problem-solving
- Strong organizational skills and reliable follow-through
- Comfort working alongside other household staff
- Physical capacity to handle hands-on household tasks across two homes
- Must drive and be willing to use their personal vehicle for the role, with mileage reimbursed at the IRS rate
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Hands-on experience sourcing, vetting, scheduling, and supervising household vendors and contractors
- Experience in a private household where household oversight and project management were core, ongoing responsibilities
- Experience owning household projects from start to finish, such as renovations, organization systems, or a move between homes
- Experience coordinating children's schedules and transportation, and comfort providing back-up childcare
- Experience building systems of organization that run with little oversight
Familiarity with the Chicago and North Shore area and its household vendor and service networks is considered a meaningful addition to a candidate's background.
Agency Requirements
- 3+ years of experience as a house manager, nanny/house manager, family assistant, or estate manager in a private household
- Minimum age of 21
- Minimum of a high school diploma
- Willing to complete a criminal background check
- Three outstanding professional references who can speak directly to your experience
- Valid driver's license required
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
