Position: Head Gardener

Location: Monsey, NY

Compensation: $130,000 – $160,000 (DOE, flexible)

 

Overview

A prominent family in Monsey, NY is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Head Gardener to oversee the maintenance and care of their complex 6-acre estate.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned professional with a background in Landscape Architecture, Herbalism, or a related field, and brings a deep understanding of advanced horticultural practices. This individual will be responsible for managing a team of full-time gardening staff while ensuring the overall health, beauty, and sustainability of the estate’s landscape.

 

Key Responsibilities

Estate & Landscape Management

  • Oversee and manage the maintenance of a 6-acre estate with complex landscaping
  • Conduct regular inspections to assess the health and vitality of plants and trees
  • Develop and implement care plans for a wide variety of plant species, including fruit trees (e.g., peach trees)
  • Identify and manage plant diseases, infestations, and pest control to prevent loss of plant life

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and coordinate a team of 7–8 full-time gardening staff
  • Provide guidance, training, and oversight to ensure high standards are maintained
  • Manage staff schedules and daily workflow

Planting & Seasonal Planning

  • Plan and execute seasonal planting, harvesting, and maintenance schedules
  • Ensure all plantings align with the overall aesthetic and long-term vision of the estate

Tools, Equipment & Operations

  • Oversee proper use, care, and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning efficiently and safely

Collaboration & Design

  • Work closely with the property owner to design and enhance landscape aesthetics
  • Provide recommendations for improvements, plant selection, and long-term planning

Qualifications

  • Degree in Landscape Architecture, Herbalism, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of 6–7 years of experience in high-level gardening or horticulture
  • Proven experience managing a team of gardening staff
  • Extensive knowledge of plant health, disease management, and pest control
  • Strong understanding of complex landscaping and estate garden maintenance
  • Ability to develop and implement advanced horticultural care plans
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
