Household Assistant / House Manager

Private Residence — Long Island, NY (Asharoken)

We are a couple living in Long Island seeking a reliable, proactive, warm, and highly organized Household Assistant / House Manager to help with daily home support, dog care, errands, meal prep, and light household coordination. This role is for our private household only and is ideal for someone who enjoys dogs, takes pride in keeping a home running smoothly, and can anticipate needs without being heavily managed.  Our home is on the water on the North Shore of Long Island.

For the right person, this role could be live-in. We are also open to a domestic couple arrangement if the combined skill set is a strong fit.

Key Responsibilities

Dog Care

Our dogs are a major part of the role, so comfort and experience with dogs is essential.  We have 2 cavapoos (5 yrs and 1.5 yrs old)

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily walks and outdoor time
  • Feeding and refreshing water
  • Engagement through play, games, and basic training reinforcement
  • Taking the dog to grooming appointments
  • Coordinating pet-related supplies and appointments
  • Providing overnight dog care approximately every other week on a regular basis (when we travel)
  • Additional occasional overnight care as needed

Laundry and Linens

  • Wash, dry, fold, and put away clothing
  • Launder sheets, towels, and household linens
  • Manage guest room sheets and towels when guests are expected or have stayed
  • Keep laundry areas organized and stocked

Food and Meal Support

  • Online grocery shopping and household food ordering
  • Preparing simple lunches
  • Simple dinner prep, such as assembling meals, basic cooking, or heating up meal delivery
  • Preparing snacks and light food items
  • Keeping the kitchen stocked, organized, and tidy between professional cleanings

Household Stocking and Organization

  • Monitor and replenish household supplies
  • Maintain inventory of pantry items, toiletries, paper goods, cleaning supplies, pet supplies, flowers, and other recurring household needs
  • Keep household storage areas organized
  • Anticipate what needs to be ordered before items run out

Errands

  • Dry cleaning drop-off and pickup
  • Returns and exchanges
  • Gift purchasing, wrapping, and mailing
  • Weekly flowers
  • Pharmacy or household pickups
  • Other miscellaneous errands as needed

Light Cleaning and Tidying

This is not a deep cleaning role, as we have professional cleaners, but we would like help keeping the home tidy in between visits.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Light kitchen cleanup
  • General tidying of common areas
  • Straightening bedrooms and bathrooms as needed
  • Wiping counters and surfaces
  • Taking out trash or recycling as needed
  • Keeping the home guest-ready between cleaning appointments

Household Repairs and Vendor Coordination

No repair work is expected, but the person should be comfortable helping coordinate household maintenance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling repair people, contractors, and service providers
  • Being present for appointments when needed
  • Communicating clearly with vendors
  • Following up on outstanding household projects
  • Helping obtain quotes or coordinate logistics

Personal Assistant Support

Light personal assistant duties may include:

  • Making dinner reservations
  • Scheduling appointments
  • Coordinating gifts, deliveries, and returns
  • Helping with travel-related or household logistics
  • Managing occasional personal errands

Hosting and Events

We host occasionally, including one or two parties per year. Support may include:

  • Preparing guest rooms and bathrooms
  • Stocking food, beverages, flowers, and supplies
  • Coordinating vendors or deliveries
  • Helping set up before guests arrive
  • Light cleanup and reset afterward
  • Ensuring the home is organized and ready for hosting

Outdoor Prep

During warmer months, we spend a good deal of time outside:

  • Uncovering and covering outdoor furniture
  • Ensuring outdoor kitchen is stocked
  • Light cleanup and coordination with landscapers, pool maintenance, tennis court maintenance, etc to ensure ready for enjoyment

 

We host occasionally, including one or two parties per year. Support may include:

  • Preparing guest rooms and bathrooms
  • Stocking food, beverages, flowers, and supplies

Ideal Candidate

The ideal person is:

  • Trustworthy, discreet, and professional
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Warm, kind, and genuinely comfortable with dogs
  • Proactive and able to anticipate household needs
  • Flexible and willing to help where needed
  • Comfortable working in a private home
  • A good communicator
  • Reliable, punctual, and consistent
  • Comfortable with occasional overnights
  • Able to manage errands and household logistics independently

Requirements

  • Prior experience in a private household, house manager, personal assistant, nanny/family assistant, pet care, or similar role preferred
  • Strong references required
  • Must love dogs and have experience caring for dogs
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record preferred
  • Comfortable using apps for grocery ordering, scheduling, returns, reservations, and household communication
  • Able to lift and carry groceries, laundry, and household supplies
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States
  • Background check required

Schedule

Schedule is flexible and can be discussed based on the candidate’s availability and whether the arrangement is live-in or live-out. The role will include regular dog care and household support, plus one overnight approximately every other week and additional occasional overnights as needed.

Compensation

Compensation will be competitive and based on experience, schedule, scope of responsibilities, and whether the arrangement is live-in or live-out. Details can be discussed with qualified candidates.

Live-In / Domestic Couple Option

We are open to a live-in arrangement for the right person. We are also open to hiring a domestic couple if the couple can collectively cover the responsibilities above, including dog care, household support, errands, food prep, light tidying, vendor coordination, and general household management.  For the right domestic couple, job responsibilities and compensation would increase to account for additional person and work.  Additional scope could include property care / maintenance, driving, etc.
