Family Assistant/House Manager – Bronxville, NY
The Schedule:
40 hours are guaranteed per week. The schedule is flexible, with core coverage needed after school and through dinner (approximately 4:00pm-7:30pm). Remaining hours can be completed flexibly during the day. Beginning in summer 2027, the Family Assistant may be able to finish at 7:00pm, as later coverage will no longer be required.
Start Date: June 2026
The Child(ren):
There are three children. One is a 20-year-old at college in Philadelphia and will visit periodically for holidays and weekends. The youngest is a 14-year-old girl who will be living in Bronxville full-time with Dad and starting at a new school in the fall. Her older sibling is a 17-year-old boy who will remain in Europe with his Mom through June 2027 to complete his education.
Daughter is very friendly and outgoing; she is very sporty and plays a sport most seasons. While she is normally very independent, she will be living away from her mother all year so she may need a little extra care and warmth. She will be new at her school and might need some help hosting friends for playdates or arranging social things for her to attend.
The Family:
This American Family is returning to Bronxville after a long stint in Europe. They welcome a capable, proactive and warm personality in their home to keep the wheels turning.
Dad works in the city and commutes daily. He is straightforward, organized, and typically communicates via WhatsApp and to-do lists. He is very good about thinking of things in advance and will likely touch base every Monday or Friday to go over the plan for the week ahead and decide on the meals. While not overly talkative when he returns home, he is friendly, fair, and manages employees well.
Dad will make it a priority to try and be home most nights to have a sit-down dinner with his Daughter. Two nights per week they will try to eat with the grandparents who live in a separate house on the property. The intention would be to bring food to their adjacent house on those nights. Otherwise, the grandparents have their own full-time healthcare support (9am to 9pm) who generally manage them including cooking and cleaning. Since the grandparents have their own support staff, there is no expectation of responsibilities for the Family Assistant. That being said, it is expected that the Family Assistant has a helping attitude. For example, if going grocery shopping, it would be kind and helpful to see if they needed anything from the store.
There is also extended family that lives in the area, so certain dinners may periodically incorporate them as well. The extended family setting is very casual, and people generally help cleaning up after meals and so forth.
Last but not least is a 5yr old Labrador who is fully trained and a bundle of joy to spend time with.
The Role:
For the first year, the family will be split so the role will primarily be taking care of Dad and Daughter here in NY. It’s a true family assistant role and will suit someone who enjoys variety and taking initiative without constant direction.
The anticipated tasks of the position are:
Preparing and cooking dinner – Healthy meals: well prepared, but nothing too complicated. Can also meal prep and store in refrigerator depending upon schedule and family priorities. Recipes are typically inspired by the New York Times or America’s Test Kitchen and there is a list of recipes that are tried & tested; they are fairly straightforward meals. The week before the family decide on 5-7 recipes for the week: generally including chicken, fish, lamb, beef, pork, soup, or a vegetarian meal - this way the Family Assistant can plan the shopping list in advance. There are no allergies or food intolerances. All family members are are proficient in the kitchen, so are able to finalize meals on nights where we may be home late.
School lunch for Daughter (and perhaps Dad)
Picking up Daughter from school and ferrying to activities if needed (a car is provided)
Laundry
Ironing – six shirts per week for Dad
Light cleaning if needed – keeping things tidy to support the housekeeper, cleaning up breakfast dishes, organizing pantry, resetting bathroom etc
Grocery shopping/package returns/house admin chores

Replacing and fixings things as noticed, e.g. changing lightbulbs, getting car washed, reupping supplies

The employee is expected to maintain a shared calendar for the daughter, tracking school pickups, academic deadlines, health appointments, and social events, as well as broader family logistics such as Dad’s travel and Mom’s visits to New York.
There is no major business travel anticipated by either Mom or Dad and indeed, the children can stay overnight with their grandparents should that be needed. That being said, the ability to do additional hours is welcomed and appreciated.
The family spends time vacationing periodically, but no travel support is needed by the employee. Vacations are generally at expected times (summer holidays, Christmas, school holidays). It is expected that the Family Assistant plans vacations at similar times, so that there are no significant gaps in coverage.
